THE WORKS

Antonio Gramsci wrote political and cultural articles, reviews of books and theatrical performances, as well as commentary on customs and current affairs, within the lively context of the political and social debates of the early twentieth century.

His more intimate and personal writing found expression in his correspondence. The letters written before his imprisonment trace the cultural formation of the young Gramsci during his school and university years, his connections with the socialist and workers’ movements, and his political and journalistic activity. The Letters from Prison, by contrast, reveal the private dimension of relationships and affections maintained across distance, despite the restrictions and hardships imposed by prison regulations. While in prison, Gramsci also developed another form of writing through the Prison Notebooks: a multidisciplinary body of work that also includes translations from German, Russian, and English.

The richness of Gramsci’s reflections is reflected in the wide range of materials he used while composing the Notebooks — books, journals, newspapers — together with the remarkable intellectual background he had developed through years of study and reading.
